Fans got a trip through Papa Roach’s “Nu-Metal Time Machine” on the first night of BottleRock Napa Valley — including festival favorite Teddy Swims.
After belting out hit after hit during his hourlong set on the main Prudential Stage on Friday, May 22, Swims surprised the crowd at the nearby T-Mobile Stage for a sunset performance with Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix.
“Hey, how was your show?” Shaddix asked Swims as the singer walked onstage. “I’m sure you killed it.”
The “Lose Control” crooner’s reply: “This is the show I wanna do, my man.”
The two then ripped into a rendition of “Scars,” the Vacaville band’s aching 2004 hit from its fourth studio album, “Getting Away with Murder.”
Swims understood the assignment. The Atlanta singer lent his signature soul-pop voice to the song’s chorus, meeting Shaddix’s rasp with surprising chemistry.
It was one of the biggest highlights of day one at the Napa Valley Expo, where Lorde and Lil Wayne closed out a day full of music, wine and gourmet bites.
“Y’know, we’ve been knowing about this festival for a long, long, long time, and they finally let some rowdy motherf—s like Papa Roach on the stage,” Shaddix quipped.
Shouting out his family in the crowd and even a Backstreet Boys member watching from the onstage balcony, Shaddix looked at home.
“If you don’t know, we’re from a small town called Vacaville, a little cow town down the way,” Shaddix said. “We were just four or five kids with a dream thinking we could do this, and look at us, man. We started this in 1993 and we’re still getting up here and having the time of our lives.”
Running through its 2001 international hit “Between Angels and Insects” and a string of covers during a segment Shaddix dubbed the “Nu-Metal Time Machine” — from System of a Down’s “Chop Suey!” to “My Own Summer (Shove It)” by Deftones and Korn’s “Blind” — Papa Roach turned BottleRock into a flashback to Warped Tour in the early aughts.
The band even ended with a massive singalong of its breakout 2000 track “Last Resort.”
“Thank you guys for giving me purpose today,” Shaddix told the crowd. “What a blessing to be up on the stage again.”
